ayurveda......
HEALTH awareness of modern man has increased and most of the scientific discussions and seminars have their focus on topics regarding Health. Our system of medicine is one of the oldest health care systems of the world and still fulfilling the health needs of humanity. 'Ayurveda' the medical Gospel of Ancient India is the finished product of the convocations of Rishis(sages). They cultivated this system in their divine fertile brains through the continuous observations of their meditating mind. The harmoniously focussed meditating minds of our Great Rishis served more than the functions of a well-organized,sophisticated laboratory. There they conducted researches and documented it for posterity. We owe everything to our Acharyas(Great Teacher's) and have to bow with reverence.
What is health?
The definition of health changes with the changing world. W.H.O revised its definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Ancient Ayurvedic surgeon- Acharya Susrutha (Father of modern surgery-BC 600) elucidates a vivid picture about the concept of health. He explains health as a state of Samadosha (Homeostasis of bio-regulating factors called Vata, Pitha and Kapha), Samagni (well functioning of biological fire-digestion and metabolism), Samadhathu (harmoniously organized body tissues and systems), Samamalakriya (proper elimination of toxins and excretory products), Prasanna athma (Spiritual well being), Prasannendriya (clear sensory perception) and Prasanna mana (Mental and social well being).

Even in this advanced age of scientific evolution, we are facing deadly threat from various health problems. HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), environmental and occupational diseases, degenerative diseases, immune disorders, cancer and other chronic diseases become nightmares of modern man. Emergence of new diseases and drug resisting micro organisms made the medical echelons in a quagmire. Complications and side effects of drugs also worsened the situation.

Ayurveda-for perfect health and harmony
Ayurveda (Ayu=life and Veda=Knowledge) is the time tested, time trusted ancient Indian system of medicine practiced since 5000 years back. This holistic system of medicine covers all aspects of life and have effective cure for almost all ailments. Ayurveda is mainly based on Panchabhootha theory (the five base elements-Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether) and Tridosha Theory (the three bio regulating factors inside the living body called-Vatha, Pitha and Kapha). The Homeostasis of Tridoshas (Vatha, Pitha, Kapha) results in health and their imbalance results in diseases. So the purpose of Ayurvedic treatment is to establish the equilibrium of Doshas. This can be achieved by proper diet, exercise and medication.
Ayurveda is a complete system of medicine with many specialties. Kaya Chikitsa (General medicine), Bala Chikitsa (Paediatrics), Griha (Psychiatry), Urdwanga (Head, Eye and ENT) Salya (Surgery) Damstra (Toxicology) Jara (Geriatrics) and Vrisha (Aphrodisiacs) are the ashtangas (Eight branches) of ancient Ayurveda. Prasoothri Thanthra and Sthree Roga (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) is another specialty of Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic therapy is effective in almost all types of ailments. Rheumatic diseases, degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Motor Neuron diseases etc. have very effective treatments in Ayurveda. Obesity, Acidity, Hypertension, Cholesterol, Diabetics, Asthma, Allergy etc. have very good therapy in Ayurveda. Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Facial Paralyisis etc have effective management in Ayurveda. Immunological and degenerative disorders can be well managed with the Rejuvenating herbal preparations (Rasayanas).
The Ayurvedic Approach

The Ayurvedic Approach is different from the modern approach. Here we try to understand the cause of the diseases and then to eliminate it. If the cause is not eliminated and the symptom is suppressed by other means, the disease will progress and become difficult to manage. It may result in the manifestation of other chronic diseases. We treat the ailments with medicines having detoxifying and rejuvenating qualities. In severe cases, we purify the body by means of Panchakarma- the five purifying techniques to eliminate body toxins. The five techniques are

1. Nirooha (therapeutic enema)
2. Vamana (therapeutic emesis)
3.Virechana (therapeutic purging)
4. Nasya (nasal purge)
5. Raktha Moksha (blood letting).
Panchakarma is not necessary to treat all diseases. If the vitiation of Dosha is more and the patient is strong enough to undergo purification therapy, then we will do it with due care.
